I found this article to be depressing and inspiring all at the same time. On the one hand, Ayla’s experiences show that the media is still stuck in the dark ages, with it’s intentional mis-use of pronouns and persistant regurgitating of phrases such as ‘sex-swap’.
On the other, just how cool is the RAF for taking this position? I literally had no idea, and before reading this article I would’ve expected it to be one of the worst jobs you could pick to transition in. The really heartening thing is that Ayla describes that it’s not just a policy of acceptance, but also a culture and ethos across all of her colleagues.
There’s also the inspiration that comes from seeing a transwoman who is a positive role model in everyway and looks amazing to boot.
Do you think the Guardian is trying to make up for something? 😀
